Our Story
In 2019 I (Chris) inherited a set of basic wood and metalworking tools, which reignited a lifelong passion for tinkering and fixing things. As that hobby turned into a full-on obsession with creating new pieces, I decided to take the leap and start Unfamiliar Design. It’s now where I bring those ideas to life, crafting furniture and art from my small workshop in London.
Handcrafted Projects
Most of my projects are built around recovered or found materials. I enjoy designing in response to the character of existing objects – contrasting with or enhancing what’s already there – to give often ordinary or overlooked items the chance to become the centre of attention.

Material Impact
Alongside using a significant amount of recovered timber, the new wood I work with is primarily UK-sourced, and every piece receives natural, non-toxic finishes.
While most of my work is bespoke, I also take on occasional commercial commissions.
